Annual Congress SATW 2026

Healthy Ageing for a Vital Life

For decades, we have been talking about healthy ageing. Today, it is time for a shift in perspective: not only to live longer, but to live better.

Vital Living means health experienced as genuine vitality: physical, mental, emotional and social. It is about preventive, personalised and holistic approaches in which technology, knowledge and humanity converge.

Switzerland is ideally placed to help shape this development. The annual congress of the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences SATW brings together leading minds to discuss new pathways towards healthy, active and self-determined living.

Date:
21 May 2026

Time:
From 1:00 pm

Place:
Campus Est USI/SUPSI Lugano-Viganello

Programme

Arrival of guests and registration.

Prof. Benoît Dubuis

President SATW

Dr. Monica Duca Widmer

President University Council USI

Prof. Franco Gervasoni

Director General SUPSI

This opening keynote session lays the scientific foundation for the symposium. It will shed light on how our understanding of ageing is increasingly evolving from the treatment of disease alone to the preservation of vitality across the entire lifespan. Ageing is no longer understood solely as a chronological process, but as a complex biological phenomenon influenced by genetics, lifestyle, and environment.

Prof. Andrea Alimonti

USI / IOR Director, ETH Zurich D-HEST

Prof. Andrea Alimonti is an internationally recognized expert on the molecular mechanisms of aging and cancer biology. In his keynote, he will provide insights into the biological processes of ageing and highlight scientific advances that may contribute to a deeper understanding of these mechanisms - and potentially enable their targeted modulation.

Dr Carlo Lepori

IDSIA Former Director, SUPSI Professor

Moderation: Prof. Benoît Dubuis

While life expectancy has risen sharply over the last century, the real challenge today is to maintain physical, cognitive, and social capacity over longer lifespans. The panel discussion will examine how science, medicine and innovation can support such sustainable capacity.

From different perspectives - research, medicine, public health, and industry - the discussion will explore how factors such as nutrition, brain health, lifestyle, and social conditions influence our ability to remain active and engaged as we age.

Prof. Laurie Corna

SUPSI age.int

Prof. Laurie Corna is a specialist in ageing research and public health. She examines how demographic changes are transforming healthcare systems and social structures, and the role of prevention, lifestyle, and social factors in healthy ageing.

Dr. Michel Matter

President AMGe

Dr. Michel Matter is a physician, President of the Association des Médecins du Canton de Genève (AMGe) and founder of the All is Brain initiative. He discusses the importance of brain health and the growing role of neuroscience in preventive medicine.

Dr. Silvia Misiti

Head of Corporate Communications IBSA
Director IBSA Foundation for scientific research

Dr. Silvia Misiti explores how industry, research, and scientific foundations can support innovation in longevity and healthy ageing through collaboration and funding programmes.

Time for exchange and networking.

The pitch session presents innovative initiatives that translate scientific findings into practical solutions for vitality and healthy ageing. The projects operate at the interface of biotechnology, neurotechnology, and wearable sensing technologies.

Romain Bordas

Neurovision

Romain Bordas is the founder of Neurovision and develops technologies for neuro-visual training designed to enhance cognitive performance, decision-making capabilities, and mental resilience.

Dr. Salvatore Cincotti
