GO4IT works: IT workshops arouse lasting interest in STEM professions

The IT workshops offered by the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences SATW for secondary school students are having a positive effect. They increase interest in STEM professions, as confirmed by an independent evaluation by ETH Zurich.

Figure: Short- and medium-term changes in STEM career aspirations (ETH Zurich). The figure shows the short-term (blue vs. mint) and medium-term (blue vs. red) changes in school pupils' career aspirations for core STEM professions (excluding medicine) and Me-STEM professions (including medicine).

The MINT support programme GO4IT of the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences SATW has been offering workshops for school classes at secondary level I for several years with the aim of introducing pupils to IT professions in a fun way and counteracting career stereotypes.the workshops are very popular and are supported by the Hasler Foundation.

Initial interim results show that GO4IT is improving students' overall attitude towards STEM. This effect can be measured both in the short and medium term: the results indicate that GO4IT has an effect beyond the initial euphoria and is still remembered after three months. The findings are preliminary and will be deepened with further data collection.
