Teacher Training

Motivation and training of teachers for the introduction of technology into schools

The introduction to technology in our schools is very limited, in respect to the broad use of technology in our society. This project aims at motivating teachers to introduce more technology in their classes. To achieve this goal we need to better consider the expectations of teachers, already overloaded and reluctant to introduce new tools. Teachers need to spend a minimal amount of time in evaluating these technologies and need to get them packaged in such a way that they can use them directly. To address these issues, we aim at using the environment of the robotic festival of the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). Indeed, the workshops organized during the festival (21 workshops in 2011) illustrate in a concrete way, the same day and at the same place, the use of many educational technologies available around the topic of robotics (LEGO Minstorm, LEGO WeDo, BeoBot, BeeBot, Thymio, Explore-it kits, Kids Info, etc). During the festival a teacher can rapidly evaluate these tools in a real and motivating context. The project aims at supporting this transfer of tools from workshops to classes, for instance with the creation of educational material (documents) associated to the workshops.
