Future Powertrains - The base of sustainable individual Mobility
Abstract
A
sustainable mobility system for private passenger transport has to react much
on future individual and societal needs, resulting in more diversified cars and
powertrains. Especially the needs of long distance transport in rural areas and
inner-city transport in the growing number of mega cities require different
technical answers. So a
two way roadmap may be formed, with one side clearly being focused on
combustion engines with some electrical support and a second way highly
concentrated on electrification using batteries or fuel cells and hydrogen as
energy carrier.
For longer mobility with distances
of more than 400 km, there is no real alternative to the combustion engine with
liquid hydrocarbons, where as increasing electrification of powertrain systems
up to all electric traction is driven by the idea to supply mobility with new alternative
energy sources and realize locally emission-free mobility. The presentation will describe
this strategy and show examples for each step of the Volkswagen roadmap.
