Electricity as an alternative fuel for the automotive sector

Energie Ouest Suisse (EOS) is a major Swiss company active in power generation, transport and marketing of electricity on its own behalf and on behalf of its shareholders who are the main electricity companies in Western Switzerland. 85% of its Swiss fleet of generating units in Switzerland is composed of hydropower plants.

Abstract

Thanks to the high energy efficiency of plug-in hybrids (PHEV’s), even electricity produced by fossil energy in modern power plants offers already a short term route to high volumes of “lower carbon fuel” in the transport sector. Electricity is not a primary energy and can be produced with nearly all primary energies.

Electricity can therefore provide an efficient and viable path to a gradual shift to renewables and/or carbon free energy sources in the transportation sector.

As a major player in the Swiss electricity sector, EOS sees plug-in hybrid electrical vehicles as a promising and realistic alternative for improving the well-to-wheel energy efficiency, reducing CO2 emissions and improving the air quality in urban areas.

Philippe Méan graduated as a civil engineer degree from EPFL-Lausanne in 1974. After a few years working in a consulting engineering firm in hydropower projects developments, he went to USA where he got in 1982 a Philosophy doctorate in engineering as well as a master degree in economics at University of California at Davis.Since then,he has been working in the electricity sector in Switzerland. He is currently Director of Research & Development by EOS, a major Swiss electric company
